Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Months following fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.
The company behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
