Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a delicate legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
However, some conservative commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a bill requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical folders of files that included no previously unseen data.
