Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the option to question specific calls from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
